Having been to Salzburg earlier in October last year, I kind of figured how Vienna looks like. Well, they are both in Austria, so it will be similar. I was wrong. Vienna consists more city life and evolves more music. You'll see lots of promoters dressing like Mozart around Stephansplatz, advertising their concerts to everyone, mostly tourists. Also, there is a royal opera house which Salzburg doesn't have.
Christmas is definitely the right time to visit Vienna. Christmas markets are everywhere. Personally I like the one at the summer palace most! Not so packed like the one at Rathausplatz, what's more is that every stores sold different things (stores at Birmingham Christmas Market and London Winter Wonderland sell homogeneous products which is quite boring in my opinion). From hand-made christmas decorations to traditional German punsch. I especially love the decoration made of cinnamon rolls, it smells so good! Also, I had cups of Apfelpunsch to stay warm. There are various choices of punsch, an alternative to the you-can-find-it-everywhere mulled wine.
Although the Christmas Market at Stephansplatz was comparatively small (first time to hold it from 2013), it got everything you'll need. It seemed difficult to find hot dogs and goulash elsewhere but they have it here! And they are the best I've had in my life!
Wish I can spend Christmas like this every year!
*Funny fact: I had the best hot dogs ever in Austria (both in Salzburg and Vienna), but not Germany.
